Delhi to Transform into the Locus of Electric Vehicles

India’s embrace of Electric Vehicles has been disorganised but steady. Through meticulous data analysis, it is estimated that Delhi may need to assemble nearly 35000 electric and vehicle passenger vehicles and several hundred public charging stations. Delhi metro has thrived, covering 373 kms and is emblematic of success. In order to legitimize India’s green dream, the Delhi government instigated Urban Mobility Lab, which is an organisation that deals with the identification and implementation of projects that transmute the mobility of people. Delhi government in its draft EV policy posits that Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) will make 25% of new vehicle registrations by 2023.
The electrification of goods-carrier vehicles used for short-haul deliveries is a major component of the draft Delhi EV policy. There is a pressing need to plummet air pollution in a country with the appalling vehicle purchase rate of 2000 vehicles per day. As part of Delhi Government’s endeavour to reduce vehicular pollution, Delhi has expressed readiness to underwrite 1,000 fully electric buses. Delhi Government ostensibly wants to collaborate and incentivise public to adopt EVs through inauguration of platforms like Urban Mobility Lab.It is an initiative to attract investors who are intrepid to assist Delhi on its EV transformation journey. Delhi government and Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI) are mutually working to establish a pilot project on the electrification of final-mile delivery vehicles in Delhi. The "Urban Mobility Lab" is led by RMI and was announced by NITI Aayog in November 2017.If successful, Delhi’s EV model will be mirrored across other cities as well.
