Meet Sunny Gupta: The Man Who Sold a Startup for 2 Billion Dollars

Sunny Gupta has sold four start-ups and last one was sold for a whooping price of $2 billion. He said that his success was mainly driven by customer satisfaction. Sunny faced merely one interview in his whole career and then while working in the corporate, he realized that his career was going too typically. This propelled him to explore his entrepreneurial skills. In 1996, he started his first tech start up related to enterprise software.
For first six to nine months, he didn't seize any salary. As soon as his company stood firmly, it was bought by Rational Software for $3 million- $4 million and from there it was sold to IBM for a couple of billion dollars. Sunny felt that he should work on something sustainable, so he decided to work on his fourth venture called APPTIO for a long run. APPTIO provides cloud-based Technology Business Management (TBM) software. The company grew to $136 million and went public in 2016. In 2019, it was bought by Vista Equity in January 2019 for almost $2 billion. At present, Sunny is CEO of the company. According to him the main aspiration of an entrepreneur should be solving critical problems of customers, if money is the primary incentive then it would lead to drastic decisions. He also added, one cannot anticipate sudden success in start-ups, an entrepreneur should be prepared mentally for all the challenges and business trauma. Progress demands passion, patience and persistence. Sunny believes it is just the beginning for him, a window full of opportunities is waiting to be explored.

This problem needs to be addressed imperatively because the scale of damage will escalate every year. Rising temperatures are the epicentre of anxiety for mining, oil and gas companies. The permafrost area accounts for 15% of Russia’s oil and 80% of its gas operations. It is also home to miners including MMC Norilsk Nickel PJSC, the biggest refined nickel and palladium producer. Multiple new craters have been found in the gas-rich Yamal region, which is a risk to pipelines. By 2050, global warming may jeopardise about a fifth of structures and infrastructure across the permafrost area, costing about $84 billion.
