Hardeep Singh Puri, Civil Aviation Minister announced the extension of domestic airfares cap last week.The extension is done by three months, the last date was earlier announced as November 24. Flights are further categorised in seven different wings depending upon the durations, ranging from under 40 minutes to 180-210 minutes. The base minimum airfare of flights ranges from ₹2,000 to ₹6,500 and maximum ranges from ₹6,000 to ₹18,600. This decision comes at the vital time when domestic civil aviation is aiming for a preliminary revival due to the festive season. Earlier, in July the Director General of Civil Aviation extended the cap on fares for domestic flights until November 24 from August 24 earlier. Right now, domestic flights are allowed to use 60 percent of total capacity and aim to increase it to 70% due to Diwali. As of October 28, the average passenger load factor for domestic flights was less than 60 per cent with 1,72,628 passengers and 1698 flights.
Hardeep singh marked that "Though recovery is being seen, I would like to announce that we have decided to extend the price cap on airfares by another 3 months. We will keep reviewing it in terms of pre-Covid numbers and take a decision accordingly,"
The concerned ministry approved increasing the capacity to 45% with effect from June 27, 2020, post the first recommencement of operations of the scheduled domestic flights with effect from May 25, 2020, to a limited extent. It further permitted increasing the capacity to 60% with effect from September 2020.
