Who would have thought that a tweet made in 2018 will cause hassle in someone’s life in 2021.
We are talking about none other than Mr. Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, Inc. He needs no introduction but more than him, his tweets are famous. Elon Musk has been seen tweeting sharp and blunt statements very often but this time he faced serious repercussions as well.
Swami Vivekananda rightly said that the present is determined by past actions.
It all started in 2018 when Elon musk is his tweet, wrote: “Nothing stopping Tesla team at our car plant from voting union. Could do so tmrw if they wanted. But why pay union dues & give up stock options for nothing? Our safety record is 2X better than when plant was UAW & everybody already gets healthcare.”
This tweet came in the limelight in 2021 when National Labor Relations Board found it oppressive and threatening. As per NLRB the tweet by Mr. Elon Musk was unlawfully threatening the employees with the loss of stock options if they decided to be represented by a union.
Founding it unlawful, NLRB commanded Tesla’s CEO to delete the tweet and to post a notice addressing the unlawful tweet nationwide affirmed appropriate steps would be taken to ensure Musk complies with our directive . Tesla violated labor laws when the company dismissed an union activist employee named Richard Ortiz in 2018. NLRB directed Tesla to offer the former employee reinstatement as well as to abolish 2017 rules which prohibited distributing union literature in parking lots and barred distributing union Stickers and pamphlets without first obtaining permission.
In return Tesla files an appeal to overturn the decision issued by the regulator. Tesla in its petition said: “Because the board’s decision and order is contrary to law, petitioner respectfully requests that the court grant the petition, review the board’s decision and order, set it aside, and grant petitioner any further relief which the court deems just and equitable .”
Tesla denied all the wrongdoings and further states that the tweet by Elon Musk was protected by the first amendment guarantee of the free speech. Many seems convinced by Tesla’s statement but the thing is that Tesla once said its factories should remain union free and due to this reason Musk repeatedly clashed with workers at the factory for supporting union.
